Lightning Arrester System

Lightning Arrester

What is a Lightning Arrester System?

A lightning arrester system is a device which is used for the protection of the equipment at the substations against traveling waves. In simple terms, lightning arresters redirect the abnormal high voltages to ground, without disrupting the power supply’s continuity. It is connected to the earth and the line, i.e., in conjunction with the equipment in order to be protected in the substation.

What is a Lightning Arrester’s Mechanism?

Lightning arresters are generally installed close to a crucial access point for an appliance or entryway, for example, electrical panels and generators. When lightning strikes, the arrester triggers and redirects the lightning towards the ground, from where it disperses in a harmless manner.

Keep in mind that these devices don’t stop lightning strikes because it would be dangerous. Instead, they reduce electricity and redirect it to an easy route through the ground and it gives lightning a safe way to prevent it from passing through your critical electrical equipment.

There are twelve different kinds of lightning arresters.

  • Rod Gap Arrester
  • Sphere Gap Arrester
  • Horn Gap Arrester
  • Multiple-Gap Arrester
  • Impulse Protective Gap Arrester
  • Electrolytic Arrester
  • Expulsion Type Lightning Arrester
  • Valve Type Lightning Arresters
  • Thyrite Lightning Arrester
  • Auto valve Arrester
  • Oxide Film Arrester
  • Metal Oxide Lightning Arrester
